From the Zodiac Series, Sylvan John Rienks drew Scorpio with a goose quill pen and ink in the early summer of 1988. Better known as John, Rienks had taken to a goose quill pen as his Mother, a member of the Shawnee Tribe, had taught him in his early childhood. He drew on inspiration from his heritage and culture, exploring subjects from flowers, animals, birds and abstract images. 

As a member of a cooperative gallery in Old Town Alexandria, Rienks’ intrinsic ate and highly detailed colored ink drawings brought him artistic notoriety in the Washington Metropolitan Region.
