Designed by Fellbach-based graphic designer Otto Rieger for the 1977 Bundesgartenschau (BUGA) held in Stuttgart, his winning design featured a flower gracefully placed on a reclining "S" (symbolizing Stuttgart).
Rieger’s work first was printed in 1976 on the announcing brochure of the biennial Federal Garden Show. With the main brochure running in 1977, over a million copies were distributed alongside a three-part guidebook, containing general information along with botanical and horticultural details, had a print run of 80,000 copies.
For BUGA 1977, the show ran 178 days between April 29 to October 23 with over seven million attendees and focused on new palace gardens, pedestrian bridges and artificial geysers for Stuttgart. Additionally, The city of Stuttgart saw an additional opportunity to attract visitors by presenting artistic elements and commissioned the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart to develop ideas. They succeeded in recruiting five nationally active artists for a project entitled "Concept and Space." German sculptors generated concepts dedicated to accessibility, experience, and comprehensibility. The idea was to place nature and sculpture in a symbiotic relationship of quiet interaction.
