Twelve works completed between 1986-1989 by Brook Andrews.

Brook Andrews is an artist whose work moves between visual art, dance, choreography, and performance. Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, Andrews studied Visual Art at Miami University before earning a Master’s Degree in Dance Education from The George Washington University. He became a founding member of the Maida Withers Dance Construction Company in 1974, where he worked within an experimental practice that brought together movement, visual art, music, technology, and improvisation. Alongside his work in dance, Andrews developed a parallel practice in painting and printmaking.

At the center of Andrews’ work is an interest in movement as a way of thinking and making. Rather than treating visual art and dance as separate disciplines, his practice suggests a more fluid relationship between the two, with gesture, rhythm, interruption, and improvisation becoming ways of constructing an image as much as a performance. His work reflects an understanding of art as something active and evolving, where the process of making can be as important as the finished composition. These prints, created between 1987 and 1989, reflect this period of his continued exploration of visual art and the relationship between movement and form.
