Artist Maija Isola took inspiration from the unrestrained energy of the 1960s to create a signature textile design style that emphasizes high-contrast yet painterly compositions. Her works were not only widely popular in the 60s/70s, but also remain highly influential and synonymous with Finnish design today. Her textile designs represented some of the most recognizable fabrics of the era, especially in their application of fashion designs that were worn by notable figures such as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, artist Georgia O’Keefe and urban planner/activist Jane Jacobs. Isola’s designs became synonymous with the Finnish textile company Marimekko (Marimekko means ''lady's dress'') that produced her work. Isola’s designs have been exhibited by and included in the permanent collections of notable institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, RISD Museum and MoMA.
